One of the most common diabetes symptoms is urinating more often than usual. This can become especially noticeable at night. You may fall asleep normally, then wake up once, twice, or several times to use the bathroom.
When blood sugar is too high, the kidneys try to remove extra glucose from the blood. This process pulls more water into the urine, which can increase urination. Over time, this can disturb sleep and leave you tired the next morning.
The CDC lists frequent urination as one of the common symptoms of diabetes, along with increased thirst and hunger, fatigue, blurry vision, mood changes, and frequent infections.
Occasional nighttime urination can happen to anyone, especially after drinking a lot of fluids before bed. But if it becomes a repeated pattern, especially with thirst, fatigue, or weight changes, it should be checked.
2. Waking Up Very Thirsty
Another nighttime sign is waking up with a dry mouth or strong thirst. This may happen because the body is losing more fluid through increased urination. The more water you lose, the more thirsty you may feel.
Some people keep water beside the bed and wake up several times to drink. Others notice that their mouth feels sticky or unusually dry in the morning. This can become a cycle: high blood sugar causes more urination, more urination causes dehydration, and dehydration causes thirst.
Mayo Clinic describes greater thirst and more urination as important symptoms that can be linked to diabetes.
Thirst alone is not enough to diagnose diabetes. A hot room, salty food, dehydration, mouth breathing, or certain medications may also cause dry mouth. But strong thirst that keeps returning should not be ignored.
