When Could White Spots Be a Sign of Vitiligo?
Vitiligo is another condition that causes loss of skin pigment, but its appearance is different from tiny scattered dots. It usually produces larger, sharply defined white patches that may gradually enlarge over time. The condition occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks pigment-producing cells. Although vitiligo is not contagious or dangerous, many people seek treatment for cosmetic reasons or emotional well-being.
Early evaluation by a dermatologist can help distinguish vitiligo from other causes of pigmentation changes and discuss available treatment options if necessary.
Protecting Your Skin
Many skin experts recommend protecting the skin from excessive ultraviolet (UV) exposure by wearing protective clothing, seeking shade during peak sunlight hours, and applying broad-spectrum sunscreen regularly. Sun protection may reduce the contrast between normal skin and lighter spots while also lowering the long-term risk of sun damage.
Maintaining good skin hydration with gentle moisturizers may also improve overall skin appearance, although moisturizers do not eliminate pigment loss caused by conditions like IGH or vitiligo.
